The promotion of agroforestry in Benin’s protected forests is bearing fruit

01.06.2026

For over two years, the consortium comprising ECO Consult and Sol Consult Africa (SolCA) has been supporting the development of agroforestry systems in the agricultural zones of ten classified forests in Benin, as part of the ‘Benin Classified Forests Project (PFC-Benin)’. The aim is to establish models for sustainable land use and to encourage the integration of farmers into agroforestry production systems.

At the request of the Project Management Unit under the Ministry of the Environment and Transport, which is responsible for Sustainable Development, and with funding from the World Bank, the focus is on training agricultural advisers. These advisers are trained to support the establishment of producers in agroforestry zones (agricultural series) and to facilitate the implementation of sustainable farming models.

On 19 and 20 May 2026, a World Bank delegation visited the Ouémé-Boukou Protected Forest to gain a first-hand understanding of the progress made. On this occasion, the results achieved so far through measures to promote agroforestry were assessed. The project is being implemented as part of a partnership between ECO Consult and SolCA and serves as an example of a balanced North-South consortium in the field of international development cooperation.
