Facilitating learning events

ECO Consult has a track record in implementing courses for various clients. The 'ready-made' courses on offer include:

  • Integrating Climate Change Adaptation into Development Planning (GIZ)
  • Ecosystem-based Adaptation (GIZ)
  • National Adaptation Planning (UNEP/GIZ)
  • Climate-smart Agriculture (GIZ)
  • Integrating Ecosystem Services into Development Planning (GIZ)
  • ValueLinks – Promotion of Sustainable Value Chains (ValueLinks Association)
  • Biodiversity conservation for human wellbeing (GIZ)
  • "Forestry for Non-foresters": a crash course (ECO)

Also, we provide stand-alone or integrated modules on organizational development topics such as participatory project planning, project appraisal and evaluation, facilitation, results-oriented monitoring, change management and leadership skills. Many specialized training modules are available from our long-term projects.  In addition to technical and methodological trainings, we support the development of trainer skills through train-the-trainer events and training-on-the-job.

To us, a successful training offers new information and insights, and supports participants in developing skills relevant to their work environment. Ideally, they will leave the course with a concrete plan of how to do things (differently), back at work. Much of these aims are in the hands of the trainer and facilitator who will support trainees in the application of the newly acquired knowledge to the greatest extent possible. Our trainings are tailor-made and reflect the needs of the target group, from decision makers to practitioners.

ECO Consult's in-house team and associated trainers are proficient in up-to-date adult education methods and experienced in a range of relevant sectors: integrated water resources management, rural development, decentralization, disaster risk management, forestry, combating desertification, biodiversity conservation as well as marine and coastal area management. We combine technical inputs with interactive methods that allow trainees to acquire not only knowledge but to also develop practical skills and, an important factor in change management, a favorable attitude.

Working languages are German, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Simultaneous translation is possible.

  • 2015: Training-Workshop on Integrating Ecosystem Services into Development Planning (IES) Mexico, GIZ

Jointly with GIZ, ECO facilitated a three-day training workshop on IES for staff of the National Commission of Protected Areas (CONANP), working within the region of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The participants, among them directors of different protected areas (PAs), learned how to systematically identify and valorize ecosystem services, provided through the PAs where they work. The training generated inputs for a second workshop where the findings were integrated into CONANPs regional planning for the region of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.

  • 2015: National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Angola, UNDP

Facilitation of a four-day launching workshop to assist the Angolan Government in identifying next steps for their NAP process, through multi-stakeholder involvement. The workshop was realized on the basis of a scrutiny of the main aspects of the NAP process. It contained reflections and lessons learnt from main ongoing climate mainstreaming initiatives, analysing gaps, and a broad-based discussion with Ministries of Environment, Planning and Finance on defining a roadmap for the NAP process.

  • 2014: Conservation and management of natural resources, GIZ Mongolia

Tapping on decades of implementation experience in the issue, ECO Consult introduced methods and tools for analysing value chains of non-timber forest products. Mongolian user groups profited from a survey and a series of practical trainings.

  • Since 2014: Workshops on Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) at the International Academy for Nature Conservation (INA), Vilm

Twice a year ECO facilitates a seminar on EbA for international participants of the "International Climate Protection Fellowship" of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation and for Master students within the frame of the course "International Nature Conservation". During this one-day workshop, participants get an overview of the EbA concept and gather first practical experience in identifying and prioritising adaptation options, with a focus on EbA.

  • 2010-2014: "Integrating Climate Change Adaptation into Development Cooperation" – Training of Trainers, (GIZ)

Based on the OECD Policy Guidance on Integrating Climate Change Adaptation into Development Co-operation German Technical Cooperation (former GTZ, supported by InWEnt) developed an according training course. ECO carried out three 10-day training of trainers (ToT) events in South Africa, Morocco and India, aimed at creating a pool of trainers for wide dissemination of the course. In 2014, ECO implemented a four-day top-up training of trainers on integrating climate change adaptation into development planning for consultants and technical staff from donor and partner countries: Scientific update on climate change-related issues, introduction to the newly developed EbA training and on the new module on M&E for adaptation.

  • 2012-2013: Support to the Inventory of Methods for Adaptation to Climate Change (IMACC), GIZ

In the course of the revision of GIZ’s CCA training after 3 years of implementation, our support included the activation of trainer potential. ECO prepared and implemented a series of webinars and moderated the online forum.
