"ECO supports the implementation of the Pro-Poor Growth for Peace Consolidation Programme (GPC) in Sierra Leone since 2006. Currently in its 3rd phase (2022 – 2023) the GPC supports selected agricultural value chains, thereby creating income opportunities for the rural population in the programme districts. More concretely, the GPC supports District Councils in the rehabilitation of rural feeder roads and the construction of bridges to effectively connect upstream rural communities to the main road network. In addition, selected communities obtain well, drying floors, and grain stores equipped with solar panels to provide additional services and income generating opportunities to the community.
Central to the GPC approach is to engage small, local building contractors thereby providing additional labour and income opportunities to rural unskilled youth, and in particular women. 2022, the GPC joins forces with the EPP project (GIZ) to provide economic infrastructure to additional value chains in Falaba, Kambia, Koinadugu and Kono districts.
Since April 2022 a new round of construction and rehabilitation work has started targeting another 186 km of feeder roads, 7 bridges with a total span of 99 m, 10 additional grain stores, as well as 5 vegetable processing centres."
