2019-08/ Minor consumer decisions can make a major difference for the planet's biodiversity. But how to inform consumers about the background and interlinkages? The Green Markets and Sustainable Consumption project of German-Brazilian TC has produced another alluring short film that combines rational arguments with professional, poetic design. The video exemplifies Brazil nut as a product from the Amazon that is sustainably extracted and creates income for the residents, thanks to ODA support for the market chain. Explanation of sociobiodiversity at its best - so it's consumers' turn to make their move.

Showing the faces behind the sociobiodiversity marketing chain

2019-08/ Harvesting non-timber forest products from the Brazilian Amazon forest and putting them through to national and international markets is a process that needs a plurality of actors, such as producer organizations, processing companies, public promoters and non-governmentals, to work hand in hand. The project Green Markets and Sustainable Consumption (cf. right) helps expand the offer and quality of sociobiodiversity products from the Amazon and improve public policies in the support of market access and expansion. After displaying the products and networking in domestic markets but also at fairs abroad such as German AmazonBonn and Biofach, Nuremberg, the project has now commissioned a 15-minute-film to show the faces behind the socio-biodiversity production and marketing chains, and make the goals of the project transparent.

The video was produced by the São-Paolo-based company Panorama Criativo, in coordination with GIZ Brazil and the project's political partner, the national Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA). Split up into three parts, the video is available on the cooperation partners' YouTube, Facebook and Instagram accounts. It will also be used as part of a larger campaign on sociobiodiversity and sustainable consumption, among others for restaurants and caterers. For the video, 30 interviews of 1 hour each were recorded and cut, along a script developed by ECO's Brazilian project staff.

Top performance despite a year of administrative challenges

ECO Consult fourth-largest GIZ contractor in 2018

2019-07/ ECO Consult has developed fourth-most prominent service provider of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in the business year of 2018. This is reflected in GIZ's annual procurement report, now out. According to the ranking, an approximate 3% of the total budget for international service providers in 2018 was commissioned to ECO. For the first time the company came in not only ahead of the majority of its immediate fellow-competitors in the sector but also of international service providers of any thematic area. 

 "That we were able to close the year as one of the top contractors of the entire German technical cooperation market is testimony to our efforts to satisfy clients and find innovative solutions", says Co-CEO Dietrich Busacker. As fellow-CEO Dr. Steve Sepp emphasizes: "In 2018, we have kept track all along a time and resource-consuming ISO certification process, implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, and final phase of SAP introduction. This is something we can really be proud of."

GIZ has published procurement reports since 2013. They contain the 100 most prominent cooperation partners internationally and across all fields of expertise. ECO has ever since retained its position in the top ten of companies who were entrusted by GIZ, one of Europe's largest technical implementation agencies. 

In 2018, 9.3% of GIZ's total budget of services procured went into rural development and agriculture, 5.2% to decentralization/urban and regional development, 4.4% to organizational and management consulting; 3.6% (17 million EUR) to forests/biodiversity. 3.3% were allocated to the crises/conflict sector, and 3.2% to climate change adaptation/mitigation (15.1 million EUR).
