Peru

Sustainable development programme (PDRS)

The programme works towards livelihoods improvement for the rural poor in in the northern regions of Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas and San Martin, by way of sustainable natural resources management. Components are:
- Disaster risk management in rural areas
- Sustainable value added from natural resources: production, marketing and export of agricultural products
- Resource protection: Management of protected areas, buffer zones and catchment areas.

In a joint venture with AGEG e.G., ECO Consult covers the intervention areas of environmental communication and education, payments for environmental services (with a strong conflict management aspect), and national protected area management.

ECO Consult has the overall responsibility for project design, steering and monitoring. Individual activities comprise:

- Trade promotion and facilitation of market access
- Mainstreaming and diffusion of the most important products, systematized processes and lessons learnt among educational institutions, governmental institutions at national and sub-national level as well as the private sector.

Results:

  • Aspects of disaster risk analysis are now part of the national planning system for public investment. Risk analysis criteria are used by regional governments to improve their diagnosis and planning processes. Projects planned along these methods are less vulnerable to natural disasters.

  • 1,500 small-scale producers in the north of Peru have been enabled to enter domestic and export markets through raising their agricultural productivity and increased quality of produce. The net proportion of produce brought to market has grown; the volume of exports of selected local biodiverse products has risen by 180 %.

  • Resources protection is endorsed in altogether 24 local protected areas, which are managed along participatory structures.
