The conference was a country-led initiative (CLI) in support of
the work of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF). It was one
of Germany’s activities to celebrate the “International
Year of Forests”. The conference was organized in close collaboration
with the UNFF Secretariat and FAO. The results of the conference
will be fed into the preparatory process of the upcoming UN Conference
on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).
Understanding the roles that forests can play in building a Green
Economy is central to the themes of both Rio+20 and UNFF-10 (2013):
Rio+20 will focus on the themes of “Green Economy in the Context
of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication” and ”Institutional
Framework for Sustainable Development”, while the central
theme of UNFF-10 is ”Forests and Economic Development”.
